KYLER WOKE ON A HARD, cold surface. He sat up with a start, heart pounding. This was not the passenger hold.

He was in a small dark room surrounded by sleeping children. A woman with long masses of dark curls was across the room, which was dimly lit by a com station. Skyleen. He crawled over to her and shook her shoulder. “Skyleen,” he whispered.

He was shocked at how fragile she looked with blue circles under her eyes. Somehow he’d been knocked out and something had happened. Something bad.

She woke up, her golden hazel eyes almost luminous in the dark.

“Skyleen, what happened?”

“Slavers. The crew are slavers. They put us to sleep.” She pushed the hair away from her face and rolled it into some semblance of order.

He sat up.

“How long were we out?”

“I am not sure.” She held up her arm. “No com. More than twenty-four hours though. Much has happened.”

He looked at her and fear clutched at his guts. “Are you all right? Why are we in here?”

“It is a bit of a story. Let me get you something to drink.” Skyleen went to a cupboard and returned with water and a restorative meal bar. He studied the dimly lit room. A medlab. Small children were spread out around the room. Coyt, Loyt, Darrell, and Rand were there also.

“I fell asleep after we all settle into our seats and I woke in a strange room, a type of observation chamber. I could see Arla Call, a friend of the Sanctuary. She teaches some of our older students about docking procedures. We were in separated chambers with glass walls. The walls were soundproof, so we couldn’t talk. There was a man... maybe a Zh Cle’? He showed us he would do some things with his tail scales.”

“Tail scales?”

Skyleen rubbed her forehead. “I know it sounds crazy. I’ve never seen a full blooded Zh Cle’, though I have met many mixed bloods. He had a long feathered tail and he showed how he would shake it and hard scales would fly. He indicated we should duck.”

“The slavers came for us.” Skyleen stopped talking and swallowed.

Something happened. Fury welled up in him and he had to force himself to sit there and listen, when he wanted to rush through the ship, weapons blazing.

“It worked, Kryshal shook his tail so scales flew and hit the slavers who were having a dinner. They—” Her voice broke. “Anyway, the scales flew and I ducked under the table. The scales cut and poisoned the slavers, knocked them out. They gagged and choked, some threw up, it was... ugly. I untied the man and Arla, but Arla also got poisoned. The alien or Zh Cle’—his name was Kryshal but he didn’t speak Standard well—he said he could help her on his ship. Small people could die, and Arla is a little person, small like a child. So I helped them. He had a ship in a hold, a tiny ship, not like anything I’ve ever seen.”
